From Nervous to Empowered: First-Timer Experiences

YOU HAVE TO TAKE

THE LEAP OF FAITH

In the Midwest, diving into something new often brings a bundle of nerves. Many step into our space, hearts thumping with that "what if" kind of worry. But then, something shifts. They laugh about how nervous they were, feeling right at home among friends they just haven't met yet. For the queer and GSRM community, this hesitation hits harder. They've been let down before, turned away, told "not here."

At the Autonomy Project, we get that. And we flip the script. Here, everyone who’s ever felt on the outside looking in finds an inside—a place where being yourself isn’t just allowed; it’s celebrated.

So, to those wondering, "Can I really be me there?" Yes, you can. And you'll wonder why you ever doubted.

UNFOLDING JOURNIES

Each member's path is distinct, yet there's a common thread: transformation. Whether it's Emma's leap into leadership or Mark's poetic awakening, the Autonomy Project serves as more than a backdrop; it's a catalyst for personal evolution.

Another member, found not just a community but a canvas for self-expression. As an artist who once doubted their own talent, she now sees her work celebrated on our walls. "This space taught me that my art—and my voice—matters," she reflects.

Empowerment at the Autonomy Project is not a buzzword; it's a lived experience. It's about finding—and using—your voice in ways you never imagined. M, once a shy attendee, now plays a key role in planning our events. "Finding my voice?" M ponders. "It was about realizing the power I had all along, and this community helped me see that."

"We spend so much our lives not feeling like we fit in, that we don't belong, that we almost get used to it, y'know? We stay home. We isolate ourselves. We stick to the people we already know. I had no idea what I was missing here."

NAVIGATING INITIAL HESITATIONS

It's natural to feel a whirlwind of emotions on your first visit. This is why we host so many social events where the pressure is low and the vibes are always welcoming.

Feeling shy? That’s normal, especially for our Queer and GSRM community. Past places might have let you down, made you think twice about opening up. Not here. At Autonomy Project, we’re all about knocking down those walls, making sure everyone knows they belong from the get-go.

Remember, this place is entirely run by volunteers, people are just like you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Welcoming Committee - First up, the greeters. They’re the ones with smiles as wide as the horizon, ready to make you feel like you’ve just come home. Think of them as your guides into this new adventure. You'll see them when you first come in, ready to get you checked in and ready to go.

The Creatives - Then, you'll meet the creatives. Artists, musicians, creatives, dreamers—souls who see the world in vibrant shades. They’re the heartbeat of our space, turning every corner into a canvas, every silence into a melody.

The Activists - Among us, too, are the activists. Passionate, driven, they’re the voices that dare to speak louder. Their stories, their fights, their victories—they remind us why we’re all here.

The Curious - And let’s not forget the curious. Maybe a bit like you? They’re here to explore, to question, to grow. With every conversation, they’re piecing together a world they want to be part of.

The Veterans - The veterans, the ones who’ve been with us since day one, they’re the pillars. Ask them about their journey. Their insights? Like finding keys to new doors you didn’t even know existed.

What to Expect? - A kaleidoscope of experiences, that’s what. From workshops that challenge your mind to performances that captivate your heart. Expect laughter, some introspection, maybe a tear or two, but most of all, expect to feel something real.

YOUR TURN

So, what’s holding you back? Whatever it is, know this: You’re not alone. Everyone’s first step through our doors is a leap of faith. But it’s a leap into a community that catches you, supports you, and lifts you higher.

The Autonomy Project isn’t just a place. It’s a promise. A promise that here, you’ll find more than just acceptance. You’ll find a family. And that nervousness about trying something new? You’ll find that it fades, replaced by a sense of empowerment that comes from being exactly, unapologetically, wonderfully you.

Ready to make the leap? We can’t wait to meet you.
