10 Myths About Sex Work and the Realities Behind Them

Sex work has always attracted stigma. What has changed is the packaging. Instead of pearl clutching sermons about sin, we now get arguments dressed up as concern for safety, empowerment, or public health. It sounds more polished, but the bones of the judgment have not moved an inch.

Here are ten of the most common myths about sex work and the realities that cut through them.

1. “It’s not empowering, it’s exploitative.”

Apparently empowerment only counts when it fits someone else’s idea of success. For many, sex work offers financial independence, flexible schedules, and the ability to set their own standards. If exploitation exists, it comes from denying workers rights, not from the work itself.

2. “Everyone in sex work must have trauma.”

This one is popular with armchair psychologists. Some sex workers have trauma. Others do not. Just like every other field. Pretending trauma cancels out agency is a way of saying you do not trust people to know their own minds.

3. “It fuels human trafficking.”

Conflating consensual sex work with trafficking is a convenient way to avoid actually addressing trafficking. Criminalizing workers does not save victims. It buries them. Decriminalization is what separates choice from coercion.

4. “Online sex work is ruining young people’s lives.”

Translation: people making money off their own sexuality makes me uncomfortable. Digital platforms have given workers more control than ever. Some will move on later, just like in any job. That is not a tragedy. That is life.

5. “It encourages unhealthy sexual attitudes.”

What actually encourages unhealthy attitudes is the lack of real sex education and an allergy to honest conversation about consent. Many sex workers model negotiation and boundaries better than anything you will find on dating apps.

6. “It’s not a sustainable job.”

Plenty of jobs are not lifelong careers. Athletes, models, and soldiers all have limited windows of physical or financial viability, but no one questions their legitimacy. Sex workers also diversify, save, and shift paths. That is called being an adult.

7. “It’s unsafe.”

Sex work is unsafe in the same way bicycling is unsafe. It depends entirely on the conditions around it. Where sex work is decriminalized, safety improves dramatically. The real danger is stigma and criminalization, not the job itself.

8. “It makes society more misogynistic.”

Sexism, queerphobia, and violence existed long before sex work and will outlast it if we keep pretending scapegoating will solve systemic problems. Blaming sex workers for entrenched cultural issues is a time honored tradition of pointing the finger at the most visible targets instead of dismantling the culture that actually causes harm.

9. “It harms kids.”

Children are not harmed by knowing sex work exists. They are harmed by being raised in a culture that makes sexuality unspeakable. If you want to protect kids, teach them consent, respect, and boundaries. Demonizing workers does not do that.

10. “It’s just a symptom of inequality.”

Of course inequality drives people into jobs. That is true for retail, warehouses, gig work, and just about everything else. Singling out sex work as uniquely exploitative is hypocrisy. If you really care about inequality, fight for better labor rights across the board.

These arguments may sound modern, but they carry the same stale foundation of stigma. That stigma is not just annoying background noise. It actively shapes laws, policies, and the way people treat sex workers every day.

Stigma is what makes lawmakers feel justified in criminalizing survival. It is what lets police profile, harass, and arrest people who are simply trying to work. It is why many sex workers cannot report violence without risking arrest themselves. It is why health care providers often dismiss or shame them when they seek care. It is why parents can lose custody of their children.

Stigma pushes sex work into the shadows, where exploitation and abuse thrive.

It allows real trafficking victims to remain hidden because resources are spent policing consensual workers instead of finding people who are actually coerced. It isolates workers from family and community, forcing them to choose between honesty and safety. It denies them the ability to advocate for themselves because the assumption is that their voices do not matter.

The cost of stigma is not abstract. It is eviction notices, jail time, broken families, untreated illness, and lives cut short by violence.

Sex work is work. The problem is not the people doing it. The problem is a culture that refuses to extend them the same dignity, rights, and protections given to everyone else. If we care about safety, empowerment, or equality, the answer is simple.

Breaking the Silence on Sex Trafficking: Building The Toolkit Every Community Needs

At The Autonomy Project, we believe in radical empowerment, and that means facing hard truths with honesty, clarity, and action. One of those truths is this: sex trafficking happens in our communities. It’s not only the sensationalized images you see on TV. It shows up in subtle ways, hidden within nightlife, kink, sex work, and creative spaces. Too often, it thrives in silence.

When people hear “sex trafficking,” a lot of folks picture movie scenes—someone thrown into a van, held captive in a basement, waiting to be rescued. Those stories exist, but they’re not the full picture.

The truth? Trafficking usually looks way less dramatic and way more everyday. It’s manipulation. It’s someone using control, money, or threats to chip away at someone’s choices. It can hide in relationships, workplaces, or community spaces that look “normal” from the outside.

That’s why we’re building the Comprehensive Sex Trafficking Toolkit. It’s a survivor-led guide that clears up the myths, talks about what trafficking actually looks like, and gives people real tools to recognize and respond to it.

And we need to be clear about something: sex work isn’t trafficking. Consensual sex work is labor. Trafficking is exploitation. Mixing them up doesn’t help anyone—it just adds stigma and makes it harder for survivors and sex workers to get the safety and respect they deserve.

Shattering Myths About Sex Trafficking

When most people hear “sex trafficking,” they imagine dramatic scenes of kidnapping, locked rooms, and strangers in white vans. Those images make headlines, but they’re not the whole truth.

The reality is quieter and more insidious. Trafficking often hides in plain sight, built on manipulation, coercion, financial control, and the erosion of consent. It thrives in spaces that look ordinary: relationships, workplaces, creative communities, even places that claim to be safe.

It hides in plain sight, and because people don’t know what to look for, it goes unseen. But the harm is real.

The problem is, most of us have been taught the wrong story about trafficking. We’ve been told it’s the same thing as sex work, or that it only happens “somewhere else.” That confusion keeps people vulnerable.

Bottom line: sex work is a choice. Trafficking isn’t. Knowing the difference is how we keep people safe, support survivors, and protect the rights of workers who are already fighting stigma every day.

Building the Comprehensive Sex Trafficking Toolkit: Our Year-Long Roadmap

This isn’t a one-off document. It’s a full initiative that will unfold over the next year, combining research, content creation, training, and community distribution.

We’re already deep into the process—currently in Phase 3 —and we want to share the journey with you.

Phase 1: Research & Survivor Input (Completed)

Before any toolkit could be drafted, we gathered the foundations:

Survivor interviews and lived experience testimony.
Literature reviews and data collection on trafficking in alternative communities, nightlife, kink, and sex work–adjacent spaces.
Identifying gaps in existing public resources.

This phase was about listening first. Survivor voices set the direction for everything that follows.

Phase 2: Drafting & Framework (Completed)

With the research in hand, we created the initial framework:

Myth-busting sections to dismantle harmful stereotypes.
Survivor guidance pieces to center resilience and healing.
Community protocols designed specifically for event organizers, venues, and peer networks.
Investigation into the various ways that trafficking affects alternative communities and how abu sers hide in plain site.

The result is a living document that already offers clarity and direction, but still needs expansion and polish.

Phase 3: Expansion & Content Creation (Current)

We are now developing educational content around the toolkit to make it accessible and engaging:

Video series explaining key topics in plain language.
Social media graphics and carousels for quick education and myth-busting outreach.
Printable posters and handouts for venues, clubs, and community spaces.
Facilitator guides for organizers who want to integrate safety protocols into their events.

This phase is where we begin turning knowledge into shareable, community-ready materials.

Phase 4: Training & Outreach (Next 12 Months)

Once the toolkit and supporting materials are ready, we’ll move into direct implementation:

Trainings for event organizers, staff, and volunteers on identifying red flags and supporting survivors.
Workshops for community members on understanding the difference between trafficking and consensual sex work.
Distribution of the toolkit online, in print, and through in-person outreach.
Integration with our broader educational programming , ensuring this work is sustained long-term.

Funds support the development and facilitation of workshops for organizers, staff, and volunteers. This includes creating facilitator guides, staffing trainers, and ensuring we can deliver both in-person and virtual sessions.

4. Wide Distribution
From local venues to national networks, this toolkit is meant to be shared broadly. Printing, shipping, and digital hosting all require resources to make sure the toolkit gets into the hands of those who need it most.

5. Long-Term Sustainability
Our goal is not a one-off project, but a living resource that evolves as our communities change. Ongoing fundraising allows us to update materials, produce additional content, and keep trainings available year after year.

Who We Are: A Queer-Led, Volunteer-Run Movement for Liberation

Sure, our merch raises a bit of money — and yes, that money helps keep the lights on in our queer community space. But the truth is, merch is more than a fundraiser. It’s a beacon. A conversation starter. A moment of connection in a sea of noise.

What is GSRM and does it include you too?

If you've spent time in LGBTQIA+ spaces or discussions, you might have come across the acronym GSRM. For some, it’s familiar; for others, it might be a new concept entirely. So, what does it mean, and how does it overlap with LGBTQIA+ identities while also carving out its own space?

Let’s dive in.

What Does GSRM Stand For?

GSRM stands for Gender, Sexual, and Romantic Minorities . At its core, it’s an inclusive umbrella term that goes beyond the LGBTQIA+ acronym to encompass a broader spectrum of experiences and identities. While LGBTQIA+ focuses on specific identities related to sexual orientation and gender identity, GSRM creates space for those who don’t necessarily identify as queer but still live outside of society’s “norms” in how they experience gender, sexuality, or relationships.

While LGBTQIA+ is already a wonderfully inclusive framework, GSRM broadens the umbrella to make sure that no one is left standing in the rain. It’s for people who might not necessarily identify as queer but still face judgment, discrimination, or stigma for how they express themselves or live their lives.

Here’s the beauty of GSRM: it focuses on the shared experiences of those who challenge societal norms, bringing together people from different walks of life who may not otherwise realize how much they have in common. It acknowledges that while our individual journeys are unique, the barriers we face often stem from the same rigid expectations society tries to impose on everyone.

By using GSRM, we’re saying, "You matter, your experiences matter, and there’s a space for you here." It’s a term that reminds us of the importance of inclusion, intersectionality, and creating community for everyone—not just for those who fit neatly into specific labels. It allows us to talk about shared struggles and joys in a way that celebrates our differences while recognizing our common ground.

How Does GSRM Overlap with LGBTQIA+?

GSRM includes LGBTQIA+ identities, which means it’s not a replacement but rather an expansion. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, intersex, asexual, pansexual—these all fall under the GSRM umbrella.

But it doesn’t stop there. GSRM opens the door for individuals and communities that don’t quite fit into the LGBTQIA+ acronym but still navigate marginalization or societal misunderstanding. It’s a way of saying, “We see you too.”

Who Else Fits Under GSRM?

Here’s where GSRM gets really interesting—it broadens the conversation to include:

Kink Practitioners and BDSM Communities : People who engage in consensual kink or BDSM often face societal stigma and misunderstanding, even though their practices are rooted in communication, trust, and consent.
Polyamorous and Non-Monogamous Folks : Relationships outside of the traditional monogamous framework often face judgment and marginalization, even though they are deeply valid ways to love and connect.
Aromantic and Relationship-Anarchist Individuals : People who experience relationships and romantic attraction outside the “norms” of dating or traditional partnerships.
Cross-Dressers and Gender Nonconformists : Those who don’t necessarily identify as transgender but still express their gender in ways that challenge societal expectations.
Sex Workers : Navigating sexuality as a profession often puts individuals in a space of societal misunderstanding and stigma, even when their work is consensual and empowering.

Why Does GSRM Matter?

GSRM allows for a more nuanced understanding of human experiences. Not everyone who faces discrimination or stigma around their gender, sexuality, or relationships identifies as LGBTQIA+.

For example:

A cisgender straight man who is deeply involved in kink or BDSM might not feel at home in LGBTQIA+ spaces but still experiences marginalization in other ways.
A polyamorous woman might be perfectly comfortable with her straight identity but still feels judged for her relationship style.

It also includes folks like:

Relationship Anarchists : Those who reject traditional relationship hierarchies and labels, focusing instead on non-structured, non-hierarchical connections.
Asexual Individuals : People who experience little or no sexual attraction but may engage in romantic relationships.
Aromantic Individuals : People who experience little or no romantic attraction and may prioritize other types of relationships.

Gold Membership ($500/year): Ideal for deeply engaging with our community, this tier offers substantial event discounts, private rental hour credits at Wicked Eden, member-only events, and more.
Silver Membership ($250/year): With significant event discounts, rental benefits, and access to exclusive events, the Silver tier is perfect for regular community participants.
Standard Membership ($125/year or $20/month): In our commitment to making our community more accessible, we’ve introduced a monthly payment option for the Standard Membership. For just $20 a month , this option eases the financial barrier to entry, ensuring that more individuals can join our vibrant community.

Professional Memberships: Elevating Your Professional Pursuits

For content creators, sex workers, educators, and other professionals, our Professional Memberships offer the resources and space needed to thrive.

Content Creators ($750/year or $75/month): This membership is designed for creatives and includes rental space at Wicked Eden, professional resources, and exclusive event access.
Industry ($400/year or $50/month): Tailored for industry professionals, offering rental space, professional development resources, and networking opportunities.

MEMBERSHIP & EVENT TICKET SCHOLARSHIPS

In our continued commitment to fostering inclusivity, we are delighted to announce the upcoming launch of our scholarship program in early 2024. This program will provide opportunities for individuals from low-income backgrounds and marginalized communities to access discounted or complimentary memberships to the Autonomy Project. This will be open for application in Q1.

Broadening Our Educational and Social Horizons

With the introduction of these flexible memberships, we are expanding our educational and social programming. Starting in 2024, expect more classes, workshops, and social events – all designed to foster learning, connection, and growth. We have some amazing classes lined up already, keep your eyes peeled!

Inclusive Space for Intimate Experiences

Recognizing the need for spaces for intimate and personal experiences, we will be introducing open play nights for Gold and Silver members . Additionally, we're enhancing our rental system to align seamlessly with our new membership structure so that both members and non-members can utilize our space, but at different fee structures.

Co-Creating with Our Community

We encourage our members to contribute their ideas and energy to help shape our events and experiences. We're particularly keen to expand our volunteer team in various areas, aiming to triple our strength by next year. Whether it's assisting with event planning, coordinating logistics, engaging with attendees, or providing valuable feedback, every contribution, no matter how big or small, plays a crucial role in creating unforgettable experiences for all involved. When the doors of Wicked Eden swung open in June, it marked the beginning of an ambitious journey. Our initial goal was clear-cut: create captivating spaces and host monthly events to support the cost of our extensive renovations. However, as the months unfolded, our vision began to transform, mirroring the rich diversity of our growing community.

A Tapestry of Diverse Identities

We quickly realized that Wicked Eden was becoming a sanctuary for a much broader spectrum: LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, trans individuals, those in alternative relationships (non-monogamy, and beyond). Our community was blossoming into a vibrant mosaic, demanding a broader focus.

Transforming the Ethos of Autonomy Project

Our ethos at the Autonomy Project has always been about more than just attendance. We envision a community that is not only about receiving but also about giving - a place where mutual contribution and transformative experiences are the norm. We want to foster an environment that inspires creativity, growth, and collective building.

New Horizons: Educational Opportunities and Social Engagements

In line with this renewed vision, starting in 2024, we're excited to introduce a diverse array of educational opportunities. These will range from classes and workshops focusing on personal health, wellness, skill-building, psychology, and communication. Our goal is to host at least one class and one discussion group each month, providing our community with valuable learning experiences.

Social events have also emerged as a vital aspect of community building. After the tremendous success of our last Tavern Night, we're eager to incorporate more of these social gatherings into our schedule. It's here we've witnessed the formation of beautiful, lasting friendships - a dynamic we didn't often see at other parties.

At the Autonomy Project, we take great pride in creating a safe and inclusive space for the LGBTQIA+ and alternative lifestyle communities. We firmly believe in the power of unity, respect, and positive community engagement. However, recent concerns have come to our attention regarding issues of parking, noise, and disorderly behavior in the residential neighborhood behind our building after the conclusion of our grand opening. As responsible members of the community, we want to address these concerns and emphasize the importance of being good neighbors.

Respecting Residential Areas: Wicked Eden is located in close proximity to a residential neighborhood, and it is essential that we demonstrate respect and consideration for our neighbors. Parking is one area where we must be mindful. We kindly request that our members and attendees avoid parking in residential areas surrounding our venue. Instead, we encourage using designated parking spaces or alternative parking arrangements to minimize any inconvenience caused to residents.

Quiet Enjoyment of the Neighborhood: We understand that occasional events and gatherings may generate excitement and enthusiasm among our community members. However, it is crucial to remember that excessive noise or disorderly behavior can disrupt the quiet enjoyment of the neighborhood for our neighbors. We urge everyone attending events at Wicked Eden to be mindful of their noise levels and clothing choices when entering and exiting the premises, especially during late hours. Anyone who is found in violation of these guidelines will have their membership revoked and be denied entrance to our space.

We encourage our members and attendees to engage in good neighbor behavior, such as maintaining a respectful distance from residential properties, refraining from littering, and abiding by any specific guidelines or regulations set by the community.

I stand before you today, filled with a profound sense of joy and gratitude. We are gathered here to celebrate not just the opening of a new establishment, but the birth of a vision, the manifestation of a dream. Today, we lift the veil on Wicked Eden.

You see, Wicked Eden is more than a catchy name. It's a promise, a temptation, and a challenge all wrapped in one. It's the result of tireless days, sleepless nights, and - just for the record - it's not as easy as it looks. We aspired to make this a place of security, creativity, and passion for our community.

Every great journey begins with a single step. Today marks that first step for Wicked Eden. But we did not arrive at this moment on our own. Our journey to this grand opening has been paved with the support, guidance, and belief of so many. Today is not just about a new beginning, but a time to express our gratitude to all those who have made this day possible.

To our incredible team, you are the beating heart of Wicked Eden. Your dedication, passion, and creativity have brought us to this moment. I am proud and grateful to each one of you. Your late nights and tireless days have not been in vain. We built this together and we’ll continue to build—just don’t worry, I think we’re done putting furniture together.
